Dr. V. Franklin, doyen of Ayurveda tourism, is no more

Dr. V. Franklin, whose name is a byword for Ayurveda-based tourism in Kerala, has passed away. He was 83.

One of the pioneers in Ayurveda tourism, Dr. Franklin has been running the Dr. Franklin's Panchakarma Institute and Research Centre at Chowara, near  the world famous Kovalam beach in Thiruvananthapuram, for the past nearly a quarter century.

Dr. Franklin's Panchakarma Institute and Research Centre represents a more-than-a-century-old tradition of ayurvedic treatment. Born and brought up in a family of Vaidyas, Dr. Franklin studied Ayurveda at the degree and postgraduate level and joined the Kerala Government service.

He, however, took voluntary retirement while serving as Chief District Medical Officer and  joined as physiotherapist of the Qatar football team, where he found that Ayurveda could play a big role in ensuring wellness, particularly in the case of people living in cold climes.

Dr. Franklin returned to India and started an Ayurveda centre at Hotel Neptune, Kovalam, in 1980. Domestic and international tourists experienced the healing touch of Ayurveda and its preventive and rejuvenating effects at his centre. Soon, he began nurturing the dream of setting up an exclusive Ayurveda centre for tourists.

That dream became a reality when he set up the 'Dr. Franklin's Panchakarma Institute & Research Centre' in 1997 at Chowara. This centre has been playing a leading role in promoting Ayurveda among the foreign tourists, providing them the benefits of authentic and rigorous ayurvedic treatment methodologies.

The centre is now headed by Dr.Sony Joseph. Dr. Franklin's has been mentoring generations of Ayurveda practitioners and masseurs at the Centre in authentic ayurvedic treatment practices at the Centre. Dr. Franklin's Panchakarma Institute and Research Centre has grown into a major institution today and is considered to be one of the best centres offering authentic Ayurveda treatment in Kerala.

Dr. Franklin's daughter Dr. Soumya Franklin is also in the leadership team of the centre now.
